When designing a YouTube advertising system, we must take into account various aspects. Firstly, it should accommodate advertisers looking to promote their content. This requires a platform where they can upload their material, identify their target audience, and set a budget. Additionally, a database system is necessary to store all this information. Next, we need to consider the users who will be viewing these ads. To enhance their experience, we could implement machine learning algorithms to display ads tailored to their interests and viewing history. This leads us to the ad-serving process. We can utilize real-time bidding to determine which ad is displayed at any given moment. This involves loading the relevant ad when a user opens a video, aligning the user profile with the ad specifications, conducting an auction among the matched ads, and selecting the ad with the highest bid. Moreover, it is essential for the system to operate at scale. YouTube receives billions of views daily, resulting in an enormous number of ad impressions. Therefore, designing a system capable of managing such a high volume is critical. We also require a system to monitor metrics such as ad views, clicks, and conversions to provide feedback to advertisers and optimize for increased revenue. This represents a preliminary approach; we would need to further elaborate on each component, taking into account aspects like fault tolerance, data replication, consistency, and data privacy.
