Requirements & Constraints : Our system must accommodate video uploads and playback. Given the scale of YouTube, it should efficiently manage a significant number of simultaneous video streams while also addressing video encoding, a recommendation engine, user interactions such as liking and commenting on videos, and search capabilities. High-Level Design : The system can be divided into five main services: Video Processing Service - Responsible for processing and encoding videos into various formats. Video Delivery Service - Facilitates the streaming of videos to users, potentially utilizing a CDN for enhanced delivery speed. Metadata Service - Manages all metadata-related information, including user profiles, video specifics (such as uploader, duration, format, etc.), comments, and likes. Recommendation Service - Suggests pertinent videos to users. Search Service - Enables users to locate videos of interest. Components & Responsibilities : The Video Processing Service will primarily deal with video uploads, storing them in blob storage, and processing/encoding them. The Video Delivery Service will stream videos to millions of users, minimizing latency through CDN usage. The Metadata Service will perform CRUD operations on video metadata, user profiles, comments, likes, etc., possibly backed by a relational or NoSQL database. The Recommendation Service must provide users with related videos based on their profiles, viewing history, and trending content. The Search Service will efficiently query millions of video metadata entries to deliver rapid search results. Data Storage & Retrieval : Videos can be stored in a distributed file system such as Google Cloud Storage or AWS S3. Video metadata, user details, likes, and comments can be managed in a distributed database. To enhance search query performance, employing an inverted index could be beneficial. Bottlenecks and Solutions : To manage high read/write requests, data sharding or partitioning strategies can be implemented. A distributed file system can be utilized to accommodate extensive video storage requirements. A CDN can be used to ensure quicker data delivery and to handle substantial data stream requests.
