The Discover Weekly playlist feature operates by assessing the musical preferences of a user, comparing them to those of other users, and recommending songs favored by individuals with similar tastes. The initial step involves gathering information on the user's listening patterns. This encompasses data on songs played, how often they are played, songs marked as liked, artists followed, and playlists created. Following this, we build a user profile based on the gathered data. This profile can be represented as a vector in a high-dimensional space, where each dimension represents a distinct song or artist. Similarity between two profiles can be determined using techniques like cosine similarity. To identify users with similar tastes, we can implement a K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm. This algorithm identifies the K users who are nearest to the target user in the vector space and recommends songs that these users enjoy. The system must also take scalability into account as the user base and data volume grow. For scalability, we might utilize distributed systems for data storage and processing, such as Hadoop and Spark. Lastly, it is crucial to prioritize user privacy. All collected data should be anonymized and utilized only with the user’s consent.
