As a Product Manager at Yelp, a comprehensive strategy is necessary to identify and manage fraudulent reviews. To begin with, we could create a scoring system that flags reviews based on specific criteria, such as the number of reviews from a single user, extreme ratings lacking detailed comments, and reviews with identical or similar content from multiple users. Additionally, we could monitor IP addresses to identify suspicious groups of reviews that may originate from spam bots. Utilizing machine learning algorithms could prove to be a valuable approach for this task. These algorithms could be trained on a dataset containing both authentic and fake reviews, learning from characteristics such as review length, the frequency of particular keywords, specific sentiments expressed, and the timing of the reviews. This model would then be able to predict with a reasonable level of confidence whether a new review is genuine or fraudulent. To enhance the legitimacy of reviews, we could reinforce the connection between reviews and actual transactions, potentially by partnering with businesses to implement a QR-code system. Users could scan these codes at businesses to verify their visits, thereby enabling them to leave reviews only after validation. In order to address the continually changing tactics used by those writing fake reviews, it is crucial to adopt an iterative approach that involves constantly learning from identified fraudulent reviews, refining algorithms, and updating review policies and security measures.
