In my previous position as a project manager, I encountered a situation where a crucial team member was repeatedly missing deadlines. My responsibility was to keep the project on schedule and ensure its completion within the established timeframe. I realized that this not only jeopardized our project timeline but also created friction within the team. Therefore, I chose to confront the issue directly. The approach I took was to arrange a one-on-one meeting with the team member to address the matter. I began by acknowledging the individual's contributions and strengths, then calmly and professionally outlined the problems and the adverse impacts of not meeting deadlines. We proceeded to discuss the challenges he was experiencing, and I suggested solutions such as offering extra support, training, or modifying the workload. The outcome was that the team member became more proactive and responsible, subsequently meeting deadlines. By tackling the issue openly and professionally, I was able to improve the situation, leading to the project being delivered on time. This experience enhanced my capability to effectively manage people-related challenges and refined my leadership and communication skills.
