Share an example of a technical debt you created and the repercussions it had. What trade-off choices are available to you?

Approach / Explanation

This question aims to assess your understanding of the concept of technical debt as well as your decision-making process in instances where you had to implement it. Technical debt is the cost associated with opting for a simpler solution rather than a more effective one that would require additional time. You are expected to describe a situation where you intentionally introduced technical debt, the effects that followed, and the trade-off options you considered. In your answer, please include: The context or situation in which the technical debt was incurred. The rationale behind selecting that technical debt. The outcomes or impacts of those decisions. The alternative options you had and the reasons for not pursuing them.

Suggested Answer

In a project I worked on, we faced a very tight deadline to launch a new feature. The optimal approach for implementing this feature would have required more time than we had available. As a result, I chose to pursue a faster, albeit less effective, solution, which led to the accumulation of technical debt. This decision means that we will eventually need to revisit this feature to enhance it. Consequently, this will result in additional work for future iterations due to the temporary fix. The alternative would have been to delay the delivery date to implement the feature correctly, but given the business needs at that time, that wasn't feasible. Looking back, my choice enabled us to meet our deadline and keep the project on schedule, but it was a trade-off. From this experience, I have learned to always consider the long-term effects before creating any technical debt.

Alternative Answer

In a previous position, we were in the process of updating our app. With a deadline approaching quickly, we realized that we couldn't fully refactor the code to meet our standards before launching. We faced a decision between delaying the release or accepting technical debt, and we opted for the latter. The result of accumulating this technical debt was that subsequent software updates required more time due to the need for code improvements. It also heightened the risk of bugs arising in the system. Nevertheless, it was a calculated decision made to ensure business continuity. An alternative option was to delay the release and invest additional time in refactoring, which would have significantly decreased future software maintenance time. However, given the competitive landscape and the urgency to maintain our advantage, we decided to accept the accrued technical debt.
