What will you do at WEX?
As a Senior member of the CSE (Customer Sponsored Enhancements) team at WEX, the Software Engineer will provide leadership for the primary team through an understanding of multiple technical areas and industry standard best practices. Will demonstrate ability to take technically complex features and strategically break them down into understandable, workable units for WEX Health teams.
What you will do
- Team Collaboration
- Support applications both during and outside business hours.
- Research issues and Service Requests quickly and efficiently. Engage in discussions and propose solutions.
- Support production deployments, which occur on evenings and weekends. Contribute to post-deployment application validation. Quickly troubleshoot, evaluate, and resolve any issues that arise.
- Participate in and lead team meetings and feature discussions.
- Software Design and Architecture
- Create basic designs for new and existing features.
- Develop solutions that can be performant, scalable, consistent, and supportable that can be accomplished within the available scope, time, and budget.
- Participate in code reviews within the team and across other teams to ensure implementations adhere to goals, standards, and best practices.
- Deliver software that meets requirements by learning the product area to provide the best long-term solutions.
- Write code that is testable at all levels (unit, integration, and end-to-end.)
- Assist in increasing unit test coverage.
- Review requirements and provide meaningful and timely feedback to improve them.
- Ask questions to ensure requirements are feasible, implementation is efficient, and the design is aligned with the technical direction set by your team and Architects.
- Participate in estimation and prioritization of project requests.
- Establish relationships with Architects, Software Engineers, Quality Assurance Engineers and Business Analysts to collaborate on design and delivery decisions.
- Project Implementation
- Contribute to the prioritization of performance improvements and technical debt.
- Understand common security vulnerabilities and best practices defined by Architects to reduce risk of security threats.
- Design and develop technical solutions in all environments, resulting in an increased level of throughput. Others use your code as an example to learn from.
- Product Proficiency
- Understand your team’s product domain and act as an internal subject matter expert.
- Basic knowledge of multiple product domains.
- Able to discuss application behavior and technology outside of the Development department in both a technical and business communication style.
- AI-Based Development
- Spec-Driven Development (GitHub SpecKit): Utilize GitHub SpecKit framework (constitution rules, spec/plan/task workflows) to transition from ad-hoc coding to structured, agentic AI workflows. Define clear non-negotiable architectural principles, system boundaries, and clear specifications prior to automated code execution.
- Model Selection & Architecture Alignment: Strategically select and evaluate optimal AI models (e.g., Claude Code, OpenAI o-series/GPT-4o, GitHub Copilot) based on task complexity, context window constraints, latency, and reasoning requirements.
- Model Context Protocol (MCP) Integration: Leverage and configure Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to grant AI agents secure, context-aware access to enterprise databases, internal APIs, and developer tools without exposing sensitive corporate data.
- Continuous AI Skill Development & Upskilling: Drive personal AI proficiency and lead team-wide upskilling initiatives on emerging AI capabilities, modern prompt engineering patterns, and agentic development workflows.
- Prompt Engineering for Code & Quality: Formulate precise technical prompts to auto-generate high-coverage unit/integration/E2E tests, C# boilerplate, and SQL scripts adhering strictly to WEX architectural standards.
- Code Refactoring & Technical Debt Reduction: Utilize AI tools to analyze legacy C# and SQL codebases, identifying performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities (OWASP top 10), and opportunities for modern refactoring.
- AI Governance & Code Review Standards: Serve as a technical gatekeeper for AI-generated code—ensuring all agentic outputs undergo rigorous code reviews, automated security scanning, and manual validation for performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
- Leadership
- Help others complete tasks to accomplish goals.
- Step into other roles to ensure project deadlines are met.
- Serve as a mentor with an ability to onboard new Software Engineers ensuring they have the proper tools and knowledge to become productive quickly.
- Participate in the interview process and provide valuable hiring recommendations.
- Provide technical and domain guidance to internal and external team members.
- Lead features or components through the full software deployment lifecycle, including integration, customer feedback, release, and support phases.
- Recommend ways to distribute work across your team to increase development efficiency.
- Perform effectively in a cross-functional team environment to ensure successful execution and delivery of project commitments.
- Demonstrate expertise in a domain as evidenced by others seeking your peer reviews, advice, and problem solving.
- Communicate priorities and dependencies across teams to ensure successful execution and delivery of commitments.
- Build relationships with Business Analysts, Quality Assurance Engineers, Architects, Product Owners, Support, Management, Configuration Management, Database Administrators, etc.
- What you will bring to the table
- 6+ years of strong C# and ASP.NET MVC skills, SQL proficiency, DevOps.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
- Experience with tools and programming languages defined by Development Managers specific to their teams
- Strong knowledge in Software Development Fundamentals and Process, Design, Documentation, Testing, and tools
- Effective in distributed team environment
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Hands on experience with automated testing tools to assist with unit testing
- Hands on experience with Devops and Infrastructure as Code
- The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan. Pay Range: $121,500.00 - $145,500.00
