POSITION SUMMARY
The Platform Engineer (DevOps) is responsible for building, maintaining, and
supporting the cloud platform and CI/CD pipeline supporting mission-critical
applications for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This role focuses on
AWS cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes administration, Linux and Windows server
management, enterprise monitoring, and continuous delivery to ensure secure,
reliable, and scalable application environments.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who enjoys solving operational
challenges, improving automation, and supporting software delivery across both
modern cloud platforms and enterprise environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Platform Engineering & Infrastructure
* Deploy, administer, and support AWS cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes-based
application platforms.
* Manage Linux virtual machines, Windows Server environments, and Service Mesh
technologies (Consul, Istio, or similar).
* Support enterprise application hosting, platform upgrades, migrations,
patching, and performance optimization.
CI/CD Pipeline Engineering
* Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines utilizing Jenkins and Argo CD.
* Support Maven build automation, application deployments, and release
management.
* Continuously improve deployment automation, reliability, and operational
efficiency.
Monitoring & Observability
* Configure and maintain enterprise monitoring solutions including Prometheus,
Grafana, Alertmanager, and Dynatrace.
* Develop dashboards, alerts, and operational metrics to improve platform
health and application performance.
* Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve infrastructure and application issues
using enterprise monitoring tools.
Platform Operations
* Support Kafka messaging infrastructure and related platform services.
* Troubleshoot production issues across infrastructure, platform, applications,
and deployment pipelines.
* Develop operational documentation, runbooks, and standard operating
procedures.
Collaboration & Delivery
* Partner closely with software developers, QA engineers, architects, Project
Managers, Scrum Masters, and VA stakeholders to support software delivery.
* Participate in Agile Scrum and SAFe ceremonies supporting iterative software
delivery.
* Support modernization initiatives while maintaining stable production
environments.
* Promote automation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across
the platform.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering,
or related field (or equivalent experience).
* 5+ years supporting enterprise cloud infrastructure, platform engineering,
DevOps, or systems engineering.
* Experience supporting Federal Government environments (VA experience strongly
preferred).
Core Technical Skills (Hands-on Production Experience Required)
Candidates should possess demonstrated hands-on production experience with the
following technologies:
* AWS Cloud Services
* Kubernetes Administration
* Linux System Administration
* Windows Server Administration
* Service Mesh (Consul, Istio, Linkerd, or similar)
* CI/CD Pipeline Engineering (Jenkins and Argo CD)
* Enterprise Monitoring & Observability (Prometheus, Grafana, Alertmanager,
Dynatrace)
* Maven Build Automation
* Kafka Messaging Platform
WORKING CONDITIONS
Standard Business hours are Monday through Friday. Occasional extended or
weekend hours may be required based on operational needs. Must have reliable
internet service that allows for effective telecommuting.
PAY RANGE
The base salary range for this position is $115,000 to $140,000 annually,
depending on geographic work location, relevant experience, skills, education,
internal equity, security clearance, and contract requirements. Geographic
salary ranges are determined in accordance with the company's compensation
practices and represent a good-faith estimate of the compensation for this
position at the time of posting.
