Job Description

GDIT is seeking a skilled Principal Cloud Engineer with Database Expertise to support the design, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of cloud‑based database systems across complex federal environments.

In this role, you will

• leverage your expertise in cloud platforms, database technologies, automation, and security to ensure resilient, high‑performance, highly available data services that meet mission-critical requirements.

• You will play a crucial role in the following: Design, deploy, and administer database solutions across cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud using native cloud database services (RDS, Aurora, Azure SQL, Cloud SQL, etc.).
• Perform configuration, performance tuning, backup/recovery, patching, replication, and monitoring of cloud-hosted databases.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) templates (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM) to automate database provisioning and configuration.
• Optimize query performance, indexing strategies, and storage usage for mission-critical applications.
• Implement, monitor, and maintain high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) solutions.
• Manage database security, encryption, IAM roles, auditing, and compliance in accordance with federal security standards (FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, etc.).
• Collaborate with application, cloud engineering, DevOps, and cybersecurity teams to design scalable and secure data architectures.
• Troubleshoot database incidents, conduct root cause analysis, and provide timely remediation across production and non-production environments.
• Support migration of legacy on-prem database systems to cloud-native or cloud-hosted platforms.
• Maintain documentation for system configurations, operational procedures, and data workflows.

• The Principal Cloud Engineer with Database Expertise must have: Education: BA/BS or equivalent Experience: 8+ years of relevant experience, with at least 5+ years of experience in Azure with a focus in databases Required Skills: Experience designing, deploying, and administering cloud database solutions Hands-on experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, DynamoDB, etc.).
• Proficiency in scripting/automation (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Familiarity with CI/CD workflows and DevOps concepts.
• Experience with monitoring and logging tools (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, ELK, Grafana, etc.).
• Strong understanding of database security, encryption, and compliance requirements.
• Ability to support critical systems in a fast-paced, mission-oriented environment.

• The likely salary range for this position is $142,792 - $189,750.
• This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary.
• Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
