Most of these processes running through disjointed platforms, automations, spreadsheets and manual handoffs. Operations Engineering exists to fix that. A dedicated function that automates workflows, builds internal tooling and puts AI to work so teams across Finance, Legal, People and beyond can do more with less.
They don't build customer-facing product, they build the systems that let the rest of the business move faster.The function is organised into squads, each aligned to a specific business domain.
Every squad has an embedded Product Owner who owns the relationship with that domain day-to-day: gathering requirements, shaping the solution and working alongside engineers who own the technical build.We're looking for a Product Owner to embed within one of our Operations Engineering squads, partnering closely with a business functions across Employment Hero.
You'll spend your time with the people doing the work today, understanding where they're stuck, and turning that into a solution your engineering team can build.This role would suit someone who enjoys working close to the business, isn't precious about ambiguity, and wants hands-on exposure to how AI and automation change the way internal teams operate.Your responsibilities will include:Requirement Gathering & Stakeholder Management Act as the primary point of contact for your embedded business domain, building a trusted relationship with stakeholders and process owners Run discovery with the people doing the work day-to-day to understand current-state process, pain points and what “good” looks like Translate messy, informal business requirements into clear, well-defined specifications an engineering team can build against Manage stakeholder expectations on scope, timelines and trade-offs, especially when the ideal solution isn't the feasible one Solution Design & Backlog Ownership Own the backlog for your squad: prioritise based on business impact, effort and dependencies across the teams you support Identify where automation, internal tooling or AI can remove manual work, and build the case for why it's worth doing Write user stories and acceptance criteria precise enough that engineers can build without repeatedly coming back for clarification Monitor delivered solutions post-launch and feed adoption, usage and feedback back into the roadmap Working with Engineering Partner with the engineers who own the technical build, staying close enough to the detail to make good trade-off calls Represent business context and constraints during sprint planning, backlog refinement and technical scoping Flag technical feasibility and effort concerns back to stakeholders early, before expectations are set Collaborate with other embedded Product Owners across Operations Engineering to spot shared problems and reusable solutions Communication Explain project status, trade-offs and blockers clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences Present progress and outcomes to stakeholders up to leadership level within your business domain Document decisions and requirements in a way that holds up when you're not in the room to explain them Who you are 2–4 years' experience as a Product Owner or in product/process improvement, ideally including internal-facing or operations-focused product work Comfortable gathering requirements directly from business stakeholders Able to write specifications and acceptance criteria precise enough to hand straight to an engineering team Experience working with development teams using agile methodology Strong analytical skills, with a track record of using data to prioritise and justify decisions Genuinely curious about AI and automation, and how they change the shape of internal operations work Comfortable challenging a stakeholder's first answer to get to the real problem Able to work autonomously with minimal supervision, across multiple stakeholder groups at once Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including with senior non-technical audiences Undergraduate qualifications in Business Systems, IT, Engineering, or a quantitative discipline (e.g., Mathematics, Statistics, Economics) preferred What we can offerAt Employment Hero, we don't just talk about a better way to work.
