About the role
What will you do at Amazon?
Automate the future of global networks: control deployment changes across
millions of devices, monitor performance at unprecedented scale, and apply data
and machine learning to keep the network healthy. Ready to engineer the backbone
of tomorrow’s internet?
Are you ready to build software and systems that power one of the largest cloud
providers in the world? Amazon Web Services runs on a world-class network and
server infrastructure, handling massive scale and the rapid integration of
emerging technologies. The AWS Core Networking Organization is looking for a
Senior Software Development Engineer to join our Network Product Development
(NPD) org.
As a Senior SDE on the Release Engineering team, you’ll build and scale the
software systems that continuously integrate, test, release, and monitor the
networking products that form the building blocks of Amazon’s cloud
infrastructure. You’ll build software that deploys new operating system versions
across Amazon’s device fleet, detects anomalies through device telemetry, and
applies statistical and machine learning models over large datasets to identify
operating-system-induced network anomalies. You’ll design the CI/CD pipelines,
automation frameworks, data-intensive test infrastructure, and observability
platforms that let thousands of engineers ship safely and predictably — removing
human touchpoints from the release path.
As a senior engineer, you’ll own the design and delivery of large, ambiguous
systems end to end, set technical direction across multiple projects, and raise
the bar for design and code quality across the team. You work hand-in-hand with
Network Engineering, Operating System software teams, and Developer Experience
teams to build large-scale distributed services on AWS. You’ll strive for
simplicity, demonstrate significant creativity and high judgment, and mentor
other engineers. You have expertise that is both deep and broad; you’re
hands-on, producing both detailed technical work and high-level software and
test/automation architecture.
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation
of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the
cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage,
networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have
continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging
problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re
looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse org of software, hardware, and network engineers, applied
scientists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll
collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for
safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest
possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that
welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
You will solve complex and ambiguous problems, efficiently and with high
quality. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the definition, vision, design,
roadmap, development, and operationalization of the systems your customers
depend on. You’ll be given an outcome and the freedom to set the direction based
on data-driven decisions. You’ll also:
Design, develop, and own large-scale distributed services on AWS that deploy new
operating system versions across Amazon’s device fleet.
Build data-intensive software that collects and rationalizes device telemetry
from many sources, and apply statistical and machine learning models over large
datasets to detect operating-system-induced network anomalies.
Design, develop, and maintain test automation frameworks and infrastructure
services for large-scale system testing, along with test case management and
coverage analysis tooling.
Design and implement CI/CD pipelines for continuous integration, test, and
deployment without human touch, and integrate them with existing software and
test systems.
Re-design infrastructure software and implement highly scalable, flexible
services that validate networking software and hardware with high reliability.
Use data to measure success and take responsibility for the quality of your
service; strive to prevent faults from impacting your customers.
Work closely with Network Engineering teams to ensure fast and smooth software
roll-outs, and troubleshoot recurring platform issues with effective escalation.
Establish software design and development best practices, review designs and
code, and mentor engineers to raise the bar across the team.
Maintain expert knowledge of trends and technologies in the cloud/networking
industry, infrastructure as a service, test automation, and data/ML-driven
systems.
A day in the life
You will be a hands-on senior technical contributor and a technical leader for
the team. You’ll work with customers to gather requirements and generate
technical designs, and you’ll carry projects through all stages of the software
lifecycle. You’ll develop products that enable builders to develop, operate, and
safely, securely, and reliably deploy high-quality software. You’ll use your
strong leadership and communication skills to mentor other engineers and provide
guidance and support for our technologies. You’ll have access to senior
leadership and engineering staff.
About the team
The Release Engineering team leads critical initiatives that power AWS’s network
infrastructure deployment and reliability. We develop intelligent automation
systems that seamlessly deploy operating systems, configurations, firmware, and
features across AWS’s global datacenter network. Our data-intensive anomaly
detection and automated triage capabilities help safeguard network stability by
proactively identifying and containing potential issues. As a cornerstone of
AWS’s networking infrastructure, we collaborate across organizational boundaries
to build resilient, scalable solutions that enhance deployment reliability while
reducing production defects.
We build CI/CD pipelines and automated services that operate a large-scale
network. We scale existing test solutions and build new services and systems
that validate our networking products, and we develop software that removes
human touchpoints so networking software and hardware continuously integrate,
test, and deploy. We own the scale, stability, reliability, and performance of
the software services that qualify the products that form the building blocks of
Amazon’s cloud infrastructure. We want people who are passionate about changing
the way networking validation and automation is done. We have one of the largest
networks in the world, and we don’t stop growing. Basic
