A Transformer is a sophisticated deep learning model specifically designed for handling sequential data, especially in the field of Natural Language Processing. It was introduced in the paper "Attention is All You Need" by Vaswani and colleagues. The unique feature of Transformer models is that, in contrast to RNN or LSTM models that process data one step at a time, Transformers enable a much greater level of parallelization, significantly speeding up the training of the model. One of the pivotal components of Transformers is the self-attention mechanism. This mechanism enables Transformers to assess the importance of a word in a sentence relative to the other words present. Consequently, they effectively take into account the context of each word while processing sequential data. Transformers have also addressed the shortcomings of LSTM and RNN models, such as their difficulty in capturing long-term dependencies and issues with vanishing or exploding gradients. Transformer models have been utilized in a variety of NLP tasks, including machine translation, text summarization, and entity recognition, among others. Additionally, some of the advanced language models we encounter today, like BERT and GPT-3, are built on Transformer architecture.
