To create Netflix's "Top Picks," we can adopt a hybrid model that integrates both Content-based filtering and Collaborative filtering. Content-based filtering generates recommendations by analyzing the user's past interactions. For instance, we can classify movies and TV shows by genres, actors, and directors, then examine the user's viewing history to identify patterns or preferences. If a user frequently watches action movies, we would suggest additional action films in their "Top Picks." Conversely, Collaborative filtering relies on recommendations derived from the viewing habits of similar users. For example, if User A and User B have comparable viewing histories, and User A enjoys a new movie that User B has not yet seen, we could recommend that movie to User B. To implement this system, we would require user interaction data such as viewing history, ratings, and watch time, along with metadata for the movies and shows, including genre, director, and actors. This system should be capable of updating recommendations in real time based on user activity, necessitating significant computational resources. Therefore, optimizing performance and ensuring scalability will be essential aspects of this design.
