Describe the technical stacks of your product and the related trade-offs.

Approach / Explanation

This question prompts you to explain the technology stack of your product, which encompasses the array of programming languages, frameworks, servers, and tools utilized in its development. The interviewer seeks to understand your technology choices and the rationale behind them. The term 'trade-offs' refers to the disadvantages, limitations, or compromises associated with your stack selection. To respond effectively, you should possess a solid grasp of your product’s tech stack, the reasons for selecting certain technologies over others, and the potential downsides of those choices. When answering this question, keep the following key points in mind: Begin with a concise overview of your product and its features. Outline the technology stack you employ, dividing it into backend, frontend, and occasionally, database management. Explain the rationale behind your tech stack decisions. Highlight the benefits of each element and how they enhance the overall product. Address the trade-offs involved. What were the potential losses or risks associated with these technology choices? Discuss how you navigate these trade-offs while ensuring the product's performance and user experience remain intact.

Suggested Answer

Our product is a SaaS platform that provides HR solutions tailored for SMEs. We chose AngularJS for the frontend development because it offers a solid framework for creating large-scale applications with an intuitive user interface. The backend is built on Node.js, which is particularly effective for real-time applications and supports quick development. We valued its performance and scalability, along with the convenience of using JavaScript throughout the entire stack. For our database management, we opted for MongoDB due to its capacity to manage large amounts of data and its scalability. However, there are trade-offs; for instance, Node.js operates on a single-threaded model, which can be limiting in CPU-intensive scenarios. To address this, we minimized CPU-heavy tasks in Node.js and delegated them to specialized microservices. Furthermore, while MongoDB is capable of handling significant data volumes, it is not the best choice for complex transactions. To counter this, we distinguished between complex transactions and simple CRUD operations by separating them into different services to ensure efficient operation.

Alternative Answer

Our product is an e-commerce platform. The frontend of our application utilizes React due to its virtual DOM, the ability to reuse components, and robust community support. The backend is built with Ruby on Rails because of its simplicity, productivity, and clarity of code. We opted for a PostgreSQL database as it is ACID compliant and accommodates both relational and non-relational data types. Its scalability, open-source nature, and comprehensive support for full-text search made it a suitable choice. There were several trade-offs to consider. While React provides reusability and performance benefits, it comes with a large library and a complex setup. However, an update in 2018 reduced the library size, enhancing its efficiency. Ruby on Rails may be slower than other languages, but we mitigated this with optimized queries, database indexing, and background jobs. Regarding PostgreSQL, we recognized its potential slowness in read operations compared to other databases, so we focused on proper indexing and optimization to improve performance.
