Provide a detailed explanation of the architecture of the platform you are currently using.

Approach / Explanation

This question requires you to give a comprehensive overview of the architecture of the platform you are currently involved with or have previously worked on. Make sure to cover the main components of the platform, their interactions, and the functionality of each part. The interviewer aims to assess your understanding of the entire system, from a broad perspective down to specific details. Additionally, you should discuss the technologies, principles, and design patterns you chose and the reasoning behind those choices. It would also be helpful to highlight any challenges faced during the development or management of this architecture and how you addressed them.

Suggested Answer

The platform I'm currently developing is an e-commerce website. At its core, we utilize the Client-Server model, where the client is represented by the browser and the server consists of the API services. The website is constructed using ReactJS to enable dynamic content rendering. React excels at enhancing user-interface performance by reducing the frequency of page refreshes through its Virtual DOM feature, which allows for the updating of subcomponents on a webpage without necessitating a full page refresh. For our databases, we utilize MySQL for transactional data and MongoDB for managing large volumes of unstructured data. MySQL serves as a dependable SQL database that offers consistency, while MongoDB accommodates the storage of extensive data with diverse structures, such as user logs. Our servers and databases are hosted on AWS, which provides features for scalability, durability, and disaster recovery. Additionally, we have integrated Redis to cache frequently accessed data, thereby alleviating the load on the database. Regarding security, we employ JWT tokens for user authorization and authentication, along with HTTPS to ensure secure communication. Our platform undergoes regular updates, and to facilitate this, we implement CI/CD pipelines, with Docker and Kubernetes supporting containerization and orchestration, respectively.

Alternative Answer

I'm currently developing a medium-sized application based on microservices, primarily focused on Online Retail Management. We utilize Spring Boot to create standalone, production-ready microservices applications, which is well-suited for our needs as it allows us to break down the application into multiple small services, each with its own business logic and functioning independently. For service registration and discovery, we use Netflix Eureka, which simplifies communication between services. To tackle issues related to failover, resilience, and fault tolerance, we implement Netflix Hystrix. The services interact with one another through synchronous REST and event-driven asynchronous communication using RabbitMQ, a messaging broker. For data storage, we combine PostgreSQL for relational data and Cassandra for non-relational data, which can efficiently manage large volumes of data across numerous commodity servers. We employ Docker for the containerization of our services and utilize Kubernetes to orchestrate these containers in a clustered environment. Our CI/CD pipeline is built around Jenkins. The API Gateway is implemented with Netflix Zuul, and we use OAuth2 for security measures. Our entire infrastructure is hosted on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), which facilitates the management of server resources and scalability.
