In my opinion, one-on-one meetings are an essential management tool for gaining insight into the unique viewpoints of your team members, ensuring alignment, and proactively addressing any challenges. I prefer to organize these meetings into three segments. First, I take the time to catch up and talk about any pressing concerns, which helps foster trust and rapport. Next, we discuss project updates, upcoming tasks, and any support that may be needed. Finally, I allow my team member to share any additional issues or ideas they may have. Towards the end of the meeting, we agree on action items and next steps, and I make sure to summarize the key points and follow up to ensure accountability on both sides. This structure helps me balance discussions focused on tasks with more personal, open-ended conversations.
