In the United States, there are four main categories of airports: commercial service, cargo service, reliever, and general aviation airports. As of 2021, the U.S. boasts more than 13,000 airports, with over 10,000 of them being private or smaller facilities. On a global scale, estimating the total number of airports is more challenging, but it is thought that there are over 40,000 airports worldwide, as many countries share similar airport structures with a combination of private and public airports.
