To achieve a balance, it is essential to adopt a user-centric perspective while making decisions based on data. Success metrics should be established in alignment with the goals of the notifications, such as enhancing re-engagement, minimizing churn, or boosting user activity. There are two important avenues for user research to explore: Qualitative research: Interact with users through interviews, focus groups, or open-ended survey questions to gather insights about their views on the current frequency, value, and effect of notifications. Quantitative analysis: Examine existing data to understand its impact on user behavior. For instance, there could be a link between the volume of notifications and instances of uninstalls, muted notifications, or decreased sessions. By merging user feedback with data analysis, we can identify the parameters for testing. We can then carry out A/B tests, adjusting the frequency of notifications and assessing the effect on the established key metrics. Ultimately, empower users by allowing them to customize notification rules according to their preferences. This approach ensures that the threshold at which notifications become excessive is largely dictated by each user's personal tolerance and choices.
