For older adults, a conventional cane may not be very effective on slippery or uneven surfaces. Additionally, there are worries about it being too cumbersome to carry comfortably. To address these issues, I propose a cane design that is lightweight, retractable, and features a jointed bottom. The lightweight characteristic can be achieved by utilizing materials such as carbon fiber or lightweight alloys, which are both durable and easy to handle. This will make it simpler for seniors to carry and maneuver the cane. To tackle the challenges presented by uneven or slippery terrain, the cane's base will incorporate a joint that allows for adjustments, helping to maintain stability on irregular surfaces. It can also include removable rubber attachments that can be swapped out based on the type of terrain, such as a textured one for snowy conditions. Making the cane retractable would enhance its portability, allowing it to be shortened and easily stored in a handbag or backpack when not in use, providing significant convenience for the user. With these modifications, the redesigned cane not only offers improved support for seniors but also enhances their safety by resolving issues found in previous models.
