A substring refers to a sequence of characters that appear consecutively within a string. In the Longest Common Substring problem, our objective is to identify the longest contiguous sequence of characters shared between two specified strings, s1 and s2 . This problem can be tackled using dynamic programming. We create a 2-dimensional array, dp , where dp[i][j] indicates the length of the longest common substring that ends at index i in s1 and index j in s2 . Initially, we set all elements of the array to 0, and then we fill in the dp array by iterating from top to bottom and left to right. For each cell dp[i][j] , if s1[i] matches s2[j] , we update dp[i][j] to dp[i-1][j-1] + 1 . This update occurs because if the characters at the current positions in both strings are identical, we can extend the length of the longest common substring that ended at the previous character positions. Ultimately, we keep track of the highest value found in dp along with its (i, j) coordinates. This highest value represents the length of the longest common substring, and we can retrieve the substring by backtracking from (i, j) until we reach a dp entry with a value of 0.
