Which Google product do you like the most, and what changes would you make to enhance it?

Approach / Explanation

This question has two main components. Firstly, the interviewer is interested in learning which Google product you utilize the most and the reasons for your preference over other options. This aspect assesses your familiarity with Google's product lineup and offers insight into your personal approach to technology. It’s a great chance to showcase your knowledge and passion for what Google has to offer. Secondly, they want to evaluate your capacity for critical analysis of the product and your ability to suggest meaningful enhancements. This part gauges your skills in problem-solving, innovation, and product development. Keep in mind that your improvement suggestions don’t need to be technical; instead, focus on how they can add value or address potential user issues. To effectively respond to this question, you should: Clearly identify your preferred Google product. Discuss why it is your favorite, highlighting its features, usability, benefits, etc. Critically assess the product, pinpointing areas where it could improve. Offer your ideas or solutions for enhancement, explaining how they could provide value. Remember to adopt a product manager's mindset, taking into account aspects such as user experience, business impact, implementation, and potential obstacles.

Suggested Answer

My preferred Google product is Gmail due to its flexibility, ease of use, and integration with other Google applications. I appreciate that it's more than just an email service; it also functions as a tool for managing tasks, setting reminders, and organizing contacts. Nonetheless, I believe there is room for enhancement in its spam management. Although Gmail effectively identifies and moves spam emails to the Spam Folder, some promotional messages from services I've subscribed to still appear in my main inbox. A possible enhancement could be the implementation of a learning AI that, over time, could analyze my email interactions and preferences to distinguish between spam promotional emails and those I actively engage with. This would optimize the email management process for users and provide a more tailored experience.

Alternative Answer

Google Maps is undoubtedly my favorite product from Google. It excels at locating places, providing directions, and estimating travel times. I also value the extra features such as restaurant reviews, traffic updates, and the street view option. However, in busy urban settings with numerous nearby attractions, the app can sometimes become quite cluttered. This can make it challenging to select a specific location on the map. One potential improvement could be to add a feature that streamlines the map view by minimizing visual distractions. For example, the app could offer a ‘Simplistic Mode’ that only displays major landmarks and roads, while allowing users to choose specific types of places, such as restaurants or bus stops, to display. This would enhance readability in densely populated areas.
