The 'For You' page on TikTok delivers customized video content tailored to each user. To create this feature, we would require a system that recommends videos based on user preferences, activities, and current social trends. Our recommendation engine would utilize both collaborative filtering and content-based filtering techniques. Collaborative filtering analyzes user behaviors to recommend items favored by similar users, while content-based filtering focuses on item characteristics to suggest related items. For the features, we would collect data from both users and content. User-related data could comprise location, age, gender, and past interactions with the app. Content-related data would include video metadata, such as categories, tags, duration, and more. This information would be used to train our machine learning models to forecast user-item interactions. To manage the vast number of users and content, we need a distributed system for data storage and processing. We could implement NoSQL databases like HBase for data storage and utilize Apache Kafka for managing streaming data. Additionally, to optimize our system's performance, we require a measurement and validation approach. We might employ A/B testing or multi-armed bandit algorithms to implement gradual changes and assess the results.
