Could you share with me what your favorite non-software product is?

Approach / Explanation

In this question, the interviewer aims to assess your ability to critically evaluate non-software products and analyze their designs. They seek to understand your skills in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of design and usability, how you envision enhancements, and your overall enthusiasm for product design. When responding, it's important to: Select a non-software product that you are truly passionate about. Emphasize the features, design aspects, or qualities of the product that make it your favorite. Address any issues you have experienced with the product and suggest potential improvements. Demonstrate your appreciation for effective design, functionality, and user experience.

Suggested Answer

One of my favorite non-software products is the Kindle e-reader. Its simple design, highlighted by the large screen, keeps the emphasis on reading. Additionally, it is very lightweight, making it ideal for extended reading sessions without causing discomfort. I appreciate how the e-ink technology mimics the appearance of a traditional book, which helps to minimize eye strain. While it lacks the color features of an iPad, the grayscale focus is ideal for a device mainly intended for reading novels. Nonetheless, one area of the Kindle that I would like to see improved is navigation. Using the touchscreen for functions beyond page turning can feel a bit awkward. I think that adding a few more physical buttons could improve navigation and overall usability.

Alternative Answer

My preferred non-software product is the Hydro Flask water bottle. What I particularly appreciate is its focus on durability, thanks to its stainless steel construction, along with its ability to maintain temperature for extended periods. I also admire the simplicity of its design, which makes a bold impression with its sleek, cylindrical shape. That said, I believe the lid design could be enhanced. The existing design does not allow for one-handed operation. Adjusting it to enable users to open and close the lid with one hand would be advantageous for those who are active and may not always have both hands available.
