Share your three favorite apps with me. Now, envision yourself as the CEO of one of those apps. What would be the key performance indicator (KPI) that you consider most crucial?

Approach / Explanation

This question consists of two key components. The first part aims to evaluate your digital literacy. By requesting a description of your favorite apps, the interviewer seeks to determine your familiarity with their features and user interfaces. The second part invites you to envision yourself in a leadership role, such as a CEO, and to identify the most crucial Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for one of these apps. This is intended to assess your grasp of strategic management, goal-setting, and your ability to identify the most pertinent metrics that reflect the success or failure of an app. To respond to this question effectively, you should: Demonstrate a solid understanding of at least three apps, articulating what they do and your reasons for favoring them. Exhibit a strategic perspective by selecting a significant KPI that would be essential for the CEO of the chosen app. Clarify how this KPI influences the app's functionality and overall success.

Suggested Answer

My top three favorite applications are LinkedIn, Spotify, and Evernote. LinkedIn has established a distinctive platform for professional networking and career advancement, serving as an excellent resource for building valuable business connections and finding job opportunities. As a music enthusiast, Spotify has revolutionized my experience. Offering an endless array of music and personalized playlists, it’s a fantastic way to discover new artists and songs. Evernote addresses the need for a comprehensive productivity tool, allowing users to manage tasks, save articles, clip web pages, and share ideas, all within a single application. If I were the CEO of LinkedIn, my main key performance indicator (KPI) would be 'Active User Growth.' Given that LinkedIn is a professional networking platform, its value proposition is closely tied to its user base. A larger number of active users leads to more job postings, applications, business partnerships, and networking opportunities. Therefore, monitoring 'Active User Growth' is essential for assessing the platform's reach and making strategic decisions to either grow or maintain the existing user base.

Alternative Answer

My top three apps are Tesla, Google Docs, and Todoist. The Tesla app enables me to control and monitor my car remotely, offering a groundbreaking approach that enriches the car ownership experience. Google Docs has become my preferred word processing application due to its built-in features, such as real-time collaborative editing and cloud storage, which greatly enhance its effectiveness. Todoist is a straightforward yet powerful task management app that helps me plan my day efficiently. If I were to take on the role of Tesla's CEO, my primary KPI would be 'User Engagement'. Since the Tesla app serves as an extension of the overall ownership experience, high user engagement is a direct indicator of customer satisfaction. By tracking 'User Engagement', we can assess how actively our customers interact with both the app and their vehicles. High engagement levels would indicate that our product is meeting its objectives, whereas low levels would suggest a need for improvements in features, user interface, or bug fixes to enhance the overall user experience.
