Although serverless computing offers advantages such as eliminating the need for server management and enabling auto-scaling, there are several challenges that can arise when deploying machine learning models in this environment. A significant concern is cold-start latency, which occurs when an Amazon Lambda function, for instance, takes longer to execute after being idle. This can adversely impact the performance of real-time machine learning applications, necessitating a method to keep the functions active to mitigate this latency. Additionally, restrictions from third-party providers regarding memory, execution time, and other factors may not meet the demands of specific machine learning workloads. One approach to address this is to integrate serverless computing with containerized environments, allowing for greater control over computational resources. Furthermore, testing and debugging become more challenging in a serverless setup due to its stateless and distributed characteristics. One potential solution is to simulate the environment locally for testing and debugging purposes. Implementing observability practices, such as structured logging or distributed tracing, can also aid in accurately diagnosing production issues.
