Share your experiences with experiments you've conducted on a past product.

Approach / Explanation

The interviewer poses this question to gauge your ability to experiment and innovate in the workplace. They are interested in how you have handled experiments in the past, focusing on the effects on the product and the outcomes. The interviewer aims to evaluate your practical experience with experimentation, your methodology, how you gather and analyze data, and the decisions you made based on that analysis. To respond to this question, consider the following steps: Describe a situation in which you conducted an experiment on a product. Outline the process you undertook: generating ideas, planning, executing, testing, and evaluating. Discuss the outcome of the experiment, noting whether it was successful or not. If it did not succeed, share what insights you gained from the experience. Indicate how the experiment influenced the product or the organization.

Suggested Answer

In my previous position, I was part of a team working on a travel booking website. Despite having a large user base, we observed that a significant number of users were not finalizing their bookings. To address this, we chose to experiment with the user interface in hopes of enhancing conversion rates. We theorized that users perceived the booking process as too complicated, leading to their decision to abandon it. We devised an A/B testing strategy, where one group of users experienced the original booking process while the other group was presented with a simplified version. After conducting this experiment for a month, we discovered that the simplified booking process resulted in a 20% higher conversion rate. Consequently, we opted to implement this change for all users, which not only improved the user experience but also resulted in an increased conversion rate.

Alternative Answer

In a prior position, I was involved in developing a mobile app that offered tailored diet and exercise plans. Although the app received positive feedback, we felt there was an opportunity to enhance user engagement further. We chose to test the addition of a social component to the app, allowing users to share their progress and inspire one another. We split our users into two groups: a control group and an experimental group, and rolled out the new feature to the experimental group. While we anticipated that the experimental group would show increased engagement, we initially observed a slight drop in user activity. However, after refining the feature based on user suggestions, we experienced a notable rise in user engagement in the subsequent weeks. This experiment highlighted that while it's vital to launch new features, understanding and integrating user feedback, and making iterative improvements is equally important. This experience underscored for me the significance of being responsive and adaptable in the product development process.
