About the role
What will you do at Quartermaster?
About Us Quartermaster is building the world's most comprehensive maritime intelligence platform. Our SmartMast™ system transforms commercial and civilian vessels into a persistent, distributed sensing network—combining HD video, AI, radar, RF sensing, and AIS to deliver real-time maritime domain awareness at global scale. With 600+ sensors deployed across 25+ countries and more than 400,000 vessels identified outside of AIS, we are setting a new standard for what ocean surveillance and safety can look like.
We are a mission-driven, high-velocity team building dual-use technology for defense agencies, coast guards, and commercial maritime operators.
Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design and release hardware for Quartermaster’s Smartmast systems and related marine products. This role focuses on marine electromechanical hardware for harsh outdoor environments, especially enclosures, mounting systems, cable integration, and production-ready design.
The right candidate has strong experience with marine electronics or comparable outdoor electromechanical systems and can work effectively on short R&D timelines while delivering hardware that is reliable, manufacturable, and ready to scale. This role is primarily remote and includes occasional travel to vessel locations or manufacturing sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and release mechanical hardware, including enclosures, mounts, brackets, interfaces, and installation solutions.
- Design for sealing, corrosion resistance, vibration, serviceability, manufacturability, and assembly quality.
- Own mechanical portions of projects from concept through prototyping, testing, and production release.
- Work with electrical, operations, manufacturing, and suppliers to resolve integration issues and improve reliability.
- Define and improve standards for cabling, connectorization, mounting, and field installation.
Qualifications
- (Preferred) Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field, or equivalent practical experience. 5+ years of experience designing mechanical hardware for marine electronics, outdoor electronics, or electromechanical systems in harsh environments.
- Strong CAD proficiency, preferably in Onshape, with the ability to create production-ready parts and assemblies.
- Experience designing for manufacturing, assembly, reliability, and field service.
- Working knowledge of electromechanical integration, including enclosures, cable routing, connectors, and hardware interfaces.
- Ability to work independently and communicate clearly with remote teams, vendors, and manufacturing partners.
- Industrial design experience is a plus.
- Work Environment Flexible working hours, with occasional intensive sprints.
- Occasional travel to vessel installations or manufacturing sites.
